The Journey

by Paul Gaughan

Everyone who works in leadership within the construction industry shares a responsibility to help create a better built environment. A place, in other words, where sustainable practices are the norm.

I speak as someone with extensive first-hand experience of the challenges. I’ve spent more than three decades in the sector – including, for the last nine years, owning and running a London-based Fit Out Contractor specialising in complex and technically demanding projects.

In recent years, however, I became increasingly aware of the negative environmental impacts that the built environment all too often has on the world around us. And I felt a growing conviction that I personally needed to find some way of helping to change the dial.

Lumybel is the answer to that question.

I set the company up in 2021 as a consultancy and practitioner business to help construction clients, contractors, and specialist contractors on their path to Net Zero and ESG - always using these targets to drive business improvement and differentiation.

Lumybel supports clients to become purpose-driven organisations, with sustainability and the circular economy at the heart of their business and strategy – creating value and purpose through construction.

There’s always more to learn in terms of how best to create a more sustainable future. I am constantly developing my own understanding of the key social, ecological and governance challenges affecting the built environment.

The key to getting this right is a complete shift of mindset within the construction industry. Companies urgently need to move from ‘business as usual’ to a purpose-driven agenda, with sustainable, regenerative practices as the go-to solutions.
